Continuing and developing our project 2010-12

Due to the success of our first Nils Holgersson project we decided to apply for a Comenius grant for the years 2010-2012 to continue and develop our project.
We have been extending the project to involve more pupils and classes at our schools in different tasks connected to our main theme.

The project 2010-2012

Our project connects eight schools from different countries in the Baltic region and aims at improving co-operation of the Baltic Sea area as part of Europe. We intend to use the figure of Nils Holgersson to introduce the European dimension into the education of our students. Nils is a tool to make our students look at their own environment and culture during diverse activities and exchange their results on the project homepage thus improving their language skills, IT skills and cultural knowledge. In bilateral meetings the students put themselves into Nils' shoes and act as a guide to their guests. In two annual multilateral meetings the students perform a theatre show "Nils travelling around the Baltic Sea". They form internationally mixed groups of actors, choir and orchestra, learn to play the scenes, to sing in all languages and to play the music. Thus they allow the audience from local schools to gain an insight into their different cultures. In the preparatory workshops and during the performance the students themselves experience authentic communication and learn to interact with students from all the partner schools.

Through this work we have seen the big need of our students to learn more about each others culture, because knowing the cultural background of our neighbours is the basis of understanding each other. Therefore we want to focus on the participating countries’ cultural inheritance and present their cultures in a new project.

Aims of the project were

·          to learn  about the past and present Nordic culture such as literature, Nordic languages, music, dance and other expressions of art and thus stimulate young people’s curiosity about and awareness of Nordic and Baltic culture in general.

·         to come together to produce joint theatre shows based on Nordic literature and showing aspects of the culture of each country.

·         to present the idea and product to young people of various age groups, teachers, parents and others interested.

·         to create a solid foundation for continuous co-operation between young people from the Nordic/Baltic region (DK, EE, FIN, LV , N, S, D, PL) and develop our Nordic and Baltic identity.

How to reach our aims:

  

·         by reading Selma Lagerlöf’s "Nils Holgersson" in all schools. The novel will be read in another Nordic language than that of the students’ own mother tongue, or in English.

·         By letting students of all countries get in contact using the “E-twinning” internet platform. All involved schools will let the figure of Nils Holgersson travel virtually around and experience each school and its surroundings. Thus we intend to involve quite a big number of young people.

·         By creating awareness of one’s own culture as seen through the eyes of Nils Holgersson through preparing a scene (by key words) for the common theatre play. By choosing typical songs and music from one’s own country for the play. The scenery will be prepared as computer files; the costumes may show the national traditions.

·         By meeting students from all countries (6 from each country) at a conference place for 5 days, forming international groups of actors, choir and orchestra, learning to play the theatre scenes (improvised theatre), learning to sing in all languages and to play the music of all countries. Each group will be led by an instructor.

·         By presenting the show rehearsed during the workshops. The theatre show transports many aspects of the countries’ cultural identities like significant scenes characteristic of the participants’ countries, music, dance and songs from all countries. During the show Selma Lagerlöf’s Nils Holgersson travels through all the participants’ countries in a modern interpretation.

·         By informing the media and students of other schools and inviting them to the show.

·         By documentation of the show as DVD which will be spread in all countries.

·         By continuously evaluating our project to improve it, staying in contact through E mail and chat.
